Philippe Saisse explores the sly and slinky, ultra-hipster magic of rhythmic displacement (playing behind the beat) of lo fi hip hop jazz on his latest perfectly titled track “Shift.” The infectious, easy shuffling tune – which features his trademark hypnotic intermingling of acoustic piano and vibraphone - is the latest manifestation of Saisse's passion for incorporating hip-hop beats and textures, which began on his solo projects on Verve Records in the late 90s.

Like many classic hybrid hip hop tracks, “Shift" has a prominent featured young artist - Chicago and NYC based trumpet player, composer and bandleader Marquis Hill – who like Saisse embodies both the jazz and hip-hop aesthetic. The 2014 winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Trumpet Competition, Hill's musical style stems from Black American Music, synthesizing, in addition to jazz and hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house music and neo-soul. Saisse became a fan of Hill's via his recordings on Spotify and reached out to him through a mutual connection, bassist Luca Alemanno.
